Medical mobile technologies - what is needed for a sustainable and scalable implementation on a global scale?
Current advances within medical technology show great potential from a global health perspective. Inexpensive, effective solutions to common problems within diagnostics, medical procedures and access to medical information are emerging within almost all fields of medicine. The innovations can benefit health care both in resource-limited and in resource-rich settings. However, there is a big gap between the proof-of-concept stage and implementation. This article will give examples of promising solutions, with special focus on mobile image-and sensor-based diagnostics. We also discuss how technology and frugal innovations could be made sustainable and widely available. Finally, a list of critical factors for success is presented, based on both our own experiences and the literature.Peer reviewe
Riskbaserad utvÀrdering av alternativ brandskyddsutformning av byggnader
In this report a riskbased method is used to verify the fire protection in a fictitious building. The purpose of the report is to evaluate if it is possible to use a riskbased method when performing the construction of the fire protection in a building. The riskbased method is used to calculate the risk, with respect to the occupants, associated with an accepted fire protection solution according to the Swedish building regulations. This risk is then compared to the risk calculated for an alternative fire protection solution and if the risk associated with the alternative design is less than the acceptable solutions risk then the alternative solution is judged to be acceptable. It is found that the risk method is practicable and useful. However, in a real design situation more investigations concerning uncertainties has to be performed
âWhat is the benefit of that?â Mathematics Teachersâ Motives in Discarding Digital Technology in their Teaching
In many countries, digital tools in mathematics education are promoted in policy. Despite this, contemporary research shows that mathematics teachers use digital tools in education less frequently as compared to teachers in other subject areas. There is a lack of research on teachersâ reasons for discarding digital tools that has a specific focus on mathematics education. In this study, we have interviewed teachers who define themselves as discarding digital tools in their teaching and described how alternative activities emerge when those teachers are engaged in mathematical learning. Cultural-historical activity theory and a thematic analysis revealed three conditions that are important for teachersâ activities: policy, teacher practices, and digital tools
Seeing ethnographically: teaching ethnography as part of CSCW
While ethnography is an established part of CSCW research, teaching and
learning ethnography presents unique and distinct challenges. This paper discusses a
study of fieldwork and analysis amongst a group of students learning ethnography as part
of a CSCW & design course. Studying the studentsâ practices we explore fieldwork as a
learning experience, both learning about fieldsites as well as learning the practices of
ethnography. During their fieldwork and analysis the students used a wiki to collaborate,
sharing their field and analytic notes. From this we draw lessons for how ethnography
can be taught as a collaborative analytic process and discuss extensions to the wiki to
better support its use for collaborating around fieldnotes. In closing we reflect upon the
role of learning ethnography as a practical hands on â rather than theoretical â pursuit
Safety Related Challenges when Designing Sustainable Cities
The transition towards sustainable city planning is challenging from many perspectives, e.g. the speed of development towards fossil free fuels and updating of regulations for controlling risk in the transport infrastructure do not manage to keep an even pace. This applies both at the detailed level regarding technical design requirements and on a more comprehensive performance level of safety objectives that can be verified to confirm compliance with society's safety objectives. This paper presents challenges, experiences and results in connection with the analysis of the risks associated with an underground bus terminal operated with gas-powered buses. A risk analysis approach used in an ongoing project in the final stage of the planning process, which makes it possible to discuss experiences and difficulties based on work in practice. Two main types of injury are studied; fire and explosion, where people can be exposed to both high temperatures, toxic smoke, radiation, pressure waves and impact by flying debris. Fire, may occur with ignition of combustible gas mixture (in air). It can be noted that an underground bus terminal operated by gas-powered buses constitutes a complex facility from a risk perspective and that the risk level without special consideration for additional safety measures is expected to be high. Therefore, a safety concept is required that is balanced between different types of measures, such as supervision, control and safety enhancing installations as well as inherent passive protection
Scanias arbete med miljöledningssystem
Societal expectations of responsible corporate conduct are currently a fact. It is manifested in
a corporate need for limiting and managing external effects, such as environmental impact.
An environmental management system is a tool for organizations to structure their
environmental work and increase their efficiency. Managing the corporate operations to
accommodate to environmental objectives requires an organizational understanding of the
objectives as well as the procedures. A condition for a successful implementation is the coworkers
ÂŽ willingness to participate and collaborate.
A study made on the co-workers attitude towards the ISO 9000 standard (i.e. quality
management system) reveals that the earlier positive findings are not completely true. The
results uncovered that one fifth of the co-workers actively opposed the quality system.
What effort is necessary for the company to take to make the co-workers more motivated with
the environmental work? This studyâs main purpose is to identify the factors that are affecting
the co-workers motivation to environmental management work at Scania in SödertÀlje. A case
study was conducted on a division at Scania and a qualitative research interview was made
with one of Scanias environmental managers. The interview was then compared against
established theories about motivation and organisation design.
Some of the most important findings were that Scania has integrated their environmental
objectives with their production system. The top management were also committed to the
environmental work, which is experienced in a continuous dialogue. Given clear objectives,
co-workers are given degrees of freedom to design their own work method by themselves
